The commune has two villages: Zawoja and Skawica, located in the Beskid Żywiecki, in the valley of the Skawica River, at the northern foot of the Mt Babia massif (1,725 metres above sea level) and between the Polica and Jałowiec ranges. Zawoja is the longest and largest village in Poland in terms of area, with outstanding climatic, scenic and tourist qualities.

Within the Zawoja Commune is the Babia Góra National Park, which attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists like a magnet. Hikers will find waterfalls, caves, rocks, and wooden buildings. Zawoja is also a sports and cultural centre. In winter, skiing enthusiasts will find excellently prepared ski slopes and cross-country skiing trails here. In contrast, ski tourers will enjoy the paths on the slopes of Mt Babia, Polica or Jałowiec. Adrenaline enthusiasts enjoy the groomed singletracks. The crystal-clear water allows bathing and is a major attraction for wintertime swimmers.

Zawoja offers tourists a rich cultural offer. Its most recognisable festival is Babiogórska Jesień (Babia Góra Autumn), the culmination of which is the autumn sheep drive (redyk), when the sheep are led out of their pastures and herded back home for the winter.
