And that's not all, of course. It is hard not to set off along the Olkusz Mining Trail to collect the 18 figurines of miners extracting precious ore.A different attribute characterises each figure, and each tells a different story. It is worth visiting the Fire Fighting Museum with its rich collection of fire-fighting equipment as well as the Regional Museum, one of Poland’s oldest regional museums, presenting ethnographic objects related to local legends and beliefs, costumes, objects of daily use, ore mining tools, as well as Jurassic minerals and fossils.
Olkusz is also home to the beautifully restored 19th-century Machnicki Manor House with the Olkusz Land Mineral Museum, the Africanist Museum and the Museum of the Works of Władysław Wołkowski, nicknamed the Michelangelo of Wicker.
Olkusz is renowned as the largest sports and leisure base in Poland and one of the largest professional leisure and sports centres in Europe. The Silver Park Recreation and Landscape Park is not only a large water ‘pond’, playgrounds, and plenty of greenery, but also an open-air museum of mining machinery used in the surrounding mines, educational trails and the remains of the Ponikowska Adit from the 16th century.
Moreover, there is the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland with the Trail of Eagles’ Nests – a beautiful and picturesque region abundant in charming natural landscapes, historical and sacred sites and spaces for various activities. Here, you will find Poland’s only desert, caves, green valleys, lofty hills, fanciful limestone rocks and clear karst springs. This is the beautiful yet natural wealth of the Upland.
The Olkusz Tourist Information Point can be found in the south-west frontage of the Market Square, a few dozen metres from the entrance to the modernly arranged ‘Underground Olkusz’ exhibition. Here, tourists can avail themselves many free publications presenting local and regional attractions, maps, including those of interest to bicyclists as well as guidebooks, catalogues and historical studies with copies in Polish and in several other languages. The PIT staff will probably remind you of the regularly scheduled Olkusz Historical Walks that visit monuments, attractions and mysteries. Of course, you can also ask about comfortable accommodation and restaurants offering local variations of perennial favourites.
An exceptionally active social media profile is a standout feature of the Olkusz Tourist Information Point.
