In a place some 50 kilometres from Kraków, in the vicinity of Gdów and Nowe Wiśnicz, in the valley of the Raba and Stradomka Rivers, lies the village of Cichawka. It is home to Frankówka Mała, a special place on the culinary map of Malopolska – the Outdoor Education Centre.
Children like to come here for school trips, pre-schoolers for workshops, and families with children. They take their first steps to a wooden bungalow with a terrace. Here, you can learn a great deal about the region and its characteristics at the local tourist information centre, which offers brochures, publications and local souvenirs. Local handicrafts include wooden toys from Żegocina, handmade and painted regional dolls from Pracownia PoWoli, and ceramics from Nowy Wiśnicz. There is also a regional bar with drinks and local snacks. A speciality of Frankówka Mała is Cichawiaczki – cebulaczki, i.e., yeast dough buns topped with carmelised chopped onion and sprinkled with poppy seed. Lessons – lectures onbringing the historical cuisine back to life again in the kitchen – are held on the terrace. The inspiration comes from the nearby Wiśnicz Castle, where the first cookbook on Polish soil, Compendium Ferculorum, was written down in the 17th century by Stanisław Czarniecki, chef for the Kraków Voivode Michał Lubomirski. This is an excellent excuse to present the culinary traditions and cultural heritage of the region in an interesting way. Next to the wooden house, thekitchen with bread oven is used for cooking workshops: ‘A lark from the oven, or what can be done with flour, yeast and water’ and ‘A loaf full of surprises’, during which children learn about different types of cereals and flour and make biscuits, which they then bake in the oven. Adult classes are of different: ‘Bread grows slowly’ – a relaxation workshop for women, ‘Pierogi fascinations’, ‘Twisted pickles dance the twist.’ The property has a large green area adjacent to the forest, there is a fire pit and a playground, and sleigh rides are organised in winter.
