Since 1994, the Museum has been housed in the town hall, one of the most authentically representative buildings in Nowy Targ. The first museum collection in Nowy Targ was created before World War I in the building of the town’s Gymnasium, under the direction of Professor Kazimierz Baran. The idea of creating the Museum was set in motion by a group of activists of the Committee on the Care of Monuments at the PTTK division Gorce, led by Czesław Pajerski, a long-term volunteer curator of the Museum. The museum now bears his name.

The Museum’s collections now include over 7,000 exhibits gathered into several departments: ethnographic, artistic, historical and natural. They are made available in temporary exhibitions and in a permanent one, entitled ’Nowy Targ at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, a town that no longer exists’. The exhibition consists of several craft workshops: shoemaking, cooperage, pottery, furriery, weaving, smithery, carpentry, and the interior of the printing house.

The exhibits are mostly donations from the inhabitants of Nowy Targ and the localities in the regions of Podhale, Spiš and Orava.
