However, the parish of Szaflary is more than 660 years old, and its history is closely connected with the statue of the Madonna of Szaflary – a Gothic polychrome sculpture made of linden wood, gilded in some parts, which depicts the Madonna and Child in the characteristic Spisz-Sądecki type of Beautiful Madonna. The sculpture, estimated to be dated back to the second half of the 14th century, shows many similarities in style and workmanship to the Madonna of Sącz, located in the Church of St Margaret in Nowy Sącz. The church in Szaflary was renovated at the beginning of the 21st century and its ceilings were covered with polychromes featuring biblical scenes and depicting the religiosity of the highlanders. Let us put it in chronological order: the original church was built of wood around 1340. It was an autonomous parish church until 1519 and was then incorporated into the parish church in Nowy Targ. The present church was built between 1799 and 1810, through the efforts of the parish priest Reverend Szymon Zamojski and the labour of the parishioners. In 1810, it was again established as a parish church and was consecrated on 3 August 1823 by the Limanowa bishop, Gregory Thomas Ziegler. The single-nave church is oriented towards the east.

Two chapels were added to the nave: on the north side, the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built in 1909, and on the south side is the Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
