The Church of St Mary Magdalene Szczucin
Rynek 19, Szczucin
Tourist region: Tarnów i okolice
After his death in 1660, his nephew, parish priest Seweryn Miklaszewski, canon of Tarnów, carried out the construction of the church. Using his own money, he set up a foundation to carry out building works. The parish priest Aleksander Nadolski finally completed the church's construction at his own expense around 1730, and he sought its consecration by the Auxiliary Bishop of Kraków, Michał Kunicki, on 26 September 1734.
In terms of style, it's a Baroque structure and, in accordance with tradition, is oriented towards the east. Initially, the church plan envisaged a rectangular nave and a short rectangular chancel, separated from the nave by a rainbow arch. The walls of the chancel are divided by pilasters into two bays and the chancel into four bays. The entire church was covered by a barrel vault with lunettes. In the nave, there were shallow niches between the pilasters, which housed side altars and confessionals. A sacristy is located against the north wall of the chancel, and a cross-ribbed vault with stucco decoration from the 17th century has been preserved in it.
Between 2020 and 2022, the Church of St Mary Magdalene in Szczucin has undergone comprehensive conservation and restoration as part of the project 'With architecture through the ages – renovation of four historic churches of the Tarnów Diocese' as part of the Regional Operational Programme of the Małopolskie Voivodeship 2014–2020.
