Old Cemetery in Tarnów, called by the locals by “zabłocki cemetery” name, is over 200 years old. With its late 18th century gravestones, the cemetery ranks among oldest preserved and active graveyards in Poland.
It is also believed to be one of the most beautiful, owing the title to numerous pieces of sepulchral art, location, intimacy and ambience and even its old trees. As a national necropolis, the cemetery shelters the bodies of the 19th century Polish freedom fighters, soldiers of the Polish Legions and members of the underground Home Army (Polish: Armia Krajowa or AK) in WWII. The “Campo Santo” – most sacred field to all the Tarnovians – is the Insurgents Quarter, quarter no. 5. And it’s been so for over 100 years now.
