The monument was designed by Tadeusz Błotnicki and created in 1903 thanks to the efforts of Tadeusz Popiołek, one of the founders of the Town Beautification Society. The historic monument is located in the green area of Planty, arranged on the Lower Market Square.
Planty in Wieliczka is a piece of the former suburb of Wieliczka, where once a salt trade centre used to operate. Contemporary Planty stretches from pl. Tadeusza Kościuszki, along ul. Powstania Warszawskiego to the Saltworks Castle.
