It is the oldest Diocesan Museum in Poland. It is housed in three tenement houses, which are located next to the cathedral. A valuable part of the collection is made up of relics of guild arts – Gothic sculpture and paintings from the Małopolska region. Other collections include a collection of chasubles and other church fabrics dating back as far as the Middle Ages as well as a collection of porcelain and clocks. A fine collection of Polish paintings from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, including those by Wojciech Weiss, Vlastimil Hofman, Kazimierz Sichulski and Jacek Malczewski, is astonishing. A large section includes folk art, above all glass painting, not only from Poland but also from many European countries. In 2019 – declared a jubilee year to commemorate the centenary of the birth of St John Paul II – Tarnów collector Bronislaw Usarz donated to the Museum a collection of gold and silver medals and coins from various mints around the world  which constitute an excellent artistic documentation of major historical events and illustrate the exceptional pontificate of the Polish Pope.
