Plac Nowy, 31-056 Kraków Tourist region: Kraków i okolice

Kraków residents call it Jewish Square or Swedish Square. For years, it was the centre of trade and social life of the Jews of Kazimierz. Until the 19th century, the area was home to the so-called Libuszhof, a set of streets and chaotic buildings that was later cleaned up as part of projects in 1808 and 1844.

The heart of the Jewish world was here, where the tourist and nightlife of the city is bustling today. These houses were the scene of a vigorous commercial life and a bustling trade in countless different things, and it was also where Jewish Cracovians spent their lives – where they were born, where they lived, and where they died. In 1900, a market hall known today as the Roundhouse was built in the middle of the square,  thus helping to organise and regulate the area’s commercial activity Inside this now-iconic structure were dozens of vendor’s stalls and a butcher's shop – a Jewish poultry slaughterhouse. In 1927, the Kraków Jewish community leased the site and converted the once-empty courtyard into a new, vastly larger butcher's shop. Today, it is extremely popular with tourists lured by the atmosphere of the square and the baked goods sold here, among other things. The rhythm of the square is still set by the traders who sell food stuffs and produce fresh from the farm as well as the antique fairs, local design fairs, Sunday clothing, pigeon markets, and other such markets and fairs.Events and festivals are also held here, and well-known artists perform on the roof of Okrąglak.  Nowy Rynek (New Square) is also home to internationally recognised clubs and pubs, including Singer,  Kolory and Alchemia.
