St. Mary's Church is one of the symbols of Krakow.
The current Gothic Basilica is located in place of a former Romanesque cathedral, whose remains are hidden underground – the usable area of the former cathedral is 2,60 m under the floor of the present church. The former cathedral was built of limestone blocks and its corners were reinforced with sandstone in the same manner as we can see in the St. Andrew Church at ul. Grodzka in Kraków. The Romanesque church had one nave and two aisles, as well as a façade crowned by two towers.
