The Jews have been living in Kazimierz for more than six centuries. Historically, a separate town and since the 19th century the district of Krakow, commonly identified with the Jewish inhabitants.
Oppidum Judeorum – Jewish town, whose walls were destroyed in 1822, left a unique, on an European scale, complex of objects of the Jewish culture. Over the centuries, the life of the Jews from cradle to grave has concentrated in Kazimierz. All cultural and municipal institutions are located within the former Jewish district, , Shabbat is still celebrated in Kazimierz.
