According to tradition, St. Stanislaus the Bishop Martyr and the patron saint of Poland was born in the small village of Szczepanów, located west of Tarnów.
In the 15th century, the famous chronicler, Jan Dlugosz, founded a Gothic church here, and in the years 1911–14 it was expanded into a larger neo-Gothic church. Karol Wojtyła visited the sanctuary on numerous occasions, and as Pope John Paul II he granted the church the status of basilica in 2003. The papal legate, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, Pope Benedict XVI, announced it in Szczepanów. The Chapel of the Nativity of St. Stanislaus, built in 1861 on the site where the later saint was allegedly born, is also worth seeing. The main church festival is celebrated in the sanctuary for eight days: from Sunday to Sunday closest to the feast day of St. Stanislaus, which falls on May 8.
