It is situated near the Kraków Planty Park on the side of ul. Basztowa – it is a medieval defensive structure constituting a part of the city fortification.
The Barbican in Kraków was erected in the 15th century and was virtually indestructible – it survived even in the 19th century, when an initiative of order restoration broke out in the city and when city fortifications were dismantled. Now it forms a part of the Museum of Kraków. Once it was surrounded by a semicircular moat with a width of 26 metres and a depth reaching almost 6 m; however, in the course of the expansion of the city, it was backfilled. The underground part of the structure was a vaulted gallery leading to special gates that allowed the crew members to get out of the fortress across the water of the moat.
